Staff Profiles

With an average of more than 10 years of staffing industry experience, we think we have the best team in Charleston. Find out more about The Alternative Staffing team by clicking on a name below:

Jan Cappellini, CTS, CSP

Since starting her career as a labor manager of a local, industrial, staffing agency, Jan has been an integral part of the staffing industry for the past 25 years. In 1993, she opened Alternative Staffing, Inc. in a small office on Remount Road to offer custom staffing solutions to local business. In 2009, Alternative Staffing opened its state-of-the-art facility—right up the road from that first small office.

From the beginning, Jan has believed in investing in the community that embraced Alternative Staffing. She has been a member of the South Carolina Staffing Association for years and served numerous positions on the board, including two terms as president. Jan is also very involved in the business community and has been a board member for the Trident Workforce Investment Board for more than 10 years, serving as chair for two of those years. An active Rotarian, and on the board on the Rotary Club of North Charleston, Jan is a big supporter of Communities in Schools and a leader in fundraising for the Annual Roundball Classic Basketball Tournament.

A long-time advocate of the use of professional affiliated staffing services and certified recruiters, Jan is also an aggressive proponent of membership in The South Carolina Staffing Association, believing that membership in this association promotes ethical behavior in our industry.

Alternative Staffing partners closely with the One Stop System and other community agencies to provide employment opportunities.

Jan graduated from the Illinois State University Magna Cum Laude with a degree in social work.

Craig Lake, President

After completing his obligation to the U.S. Navy in 1987, Craig was stationed here in Charleston, and this has been his home ever since. At the end of his tour, Craig was approached by a recruiter for a corporate staffing service, and later that year, he accepted a key roll as member of their staff.
Craig’s knowledge and hands-on experience with skilled trades and other industrial positions was invaluable in his early career and continue to serve us well today.
In 1993, Craig and Jan decided to leave the world of corporate staffing and start their own business. Based on the belief that they could offer clients an alternative to the one-size-fits-all staff solutions that were available in the market, Alternative Staffing was born. When he is not directing operations as president of Alternative Staffing, Inc., Craig enjoys golfing and being on the water with his family.

Vicki Hotchkiss, Sales Manager

Vicki started her career in business development with Alternative Staffing in 2006. She is an active member in the Maritime and Logistics communities and serves on the Palmetto Society of Human Resource Management board. Vicki is also known for being very involved in various community networking groups and has an enthusiasm for offering custom staffing solutions to local businesses and building long term partnerships in the Tri-County area.

Vicki has a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of South Carolina and enjoys traveling and reading in her free time.

Ruby Mae Johnson Wallace, Branch Manager

After spending a few years as a stay-at-home wife and mother, Ruby mae wanted to get back into the workforce. Her career path went from cosmetology to customer service before landing an Alternative Staffing field associate. After that assignment ended, we literally could not get rid of her. Ruby mae showed up at our office every day, even when there weren’t any assignments available. She watched and learned, even teaching herself how to work the computers, and fell in love with the staffing industry.

Her hard work and perseverance paid off, Ruby mae has been with Alternative Staffing ever since. Working her way from receptionist to recruiter, Ruby Mae was named office manager in 2010.

Ruby mae is mother to three beautiful daughters, Alicia, Aaliyha and Alayisha and loves to travel and read romance novels.

Chellet Davis, Assistant Manager

A day wouldn’t be complete if you don’t hear from Chellet. Her prompt phone calls have been a mainstay here at Alternative Staffing. Chellet runs the Orangeburg, SC office with pride and prestige. If you’re looking for a hard working recruiter in the Orangeburg area, Chellet is your gal.

Sarah Myers, Senior Recruiter

On our team Sarah is known as ‘The Real Deal.’ As part of her role, Sarah spends just as much time on-site learning processes as she does behind a desk recruiting. She goes above and beyond to learn more than what is contained on a candidate’s resume; she knows what they ate for breakfast. Managing our Skilled Industrial Placement Operation, Sarah uses her extensive talent network to expand our pool of pre-qualified industrial candidates and pulls from her manufacturing background to serve as our client liaison.

After serving twelve years in the U.S. Navy, Sarah settled here in the Charleston area in 1995, and we are glad she did. From that time until joining our time in 2002, she was a leader in Lowcountry Manufacturing. Since that time, she has been a client favorite in our Skilled Industrial Division.

Paul Kirkland, Human Resource Specialist

Paul joined Alternative Staffing in 2014 with an expertise in management and customer service. He gained incredible experience in the food and beverage industry as the general manager of a high volume restaurant for six years along with working for Fortune 500 companies.
Paul is a graduate of the University of Georgia with a BA in Graphic Design. In his spare time, Paul enjoys doing freelance work for local businesses and non-profits. As a Georgia native and VP of the UGA Alumni: Charleston Chapter, Paul is an avid Georgia Bulldogs fan; “Go Dawgs!”

My Children and Grandchildren are the light of my life and make me strive to be a better person each and every day.

Four years ago. I moved to Charleston, SC. I’m happy to work for Alternative Staffing. Talk to me and I think you will find me out-going and open-minded. I know what it is like to struggle, so recruiting others to find work and to be successful touches my heart in a special way.
