With an average of more than 10 years of staffing industry experience, we think we have the best team in Charleston. Find out more about The Alternative Staffing team by clicking on a name below:
Jan Cappellini, CTS, CSP
Since starting her career as a labor manager of a local, industrial, staffing agency, Jan has been an integral part of the staffing industry for the past 25 years. In 1993, she opened Alternative Staffing, Inc. in a small office on Remount Road to offer custom staffing solutions to local business. In 2009, Alternative Staffing opened its state-of-the-art facility—right up the road from that first small office.
From the beginning, Jan has believed in investing in the community that embraced Alternative Staffing. She has been a member of the South Carolina Staffing Association for years and served numerous positions on the board, including two terms as president. Jan is also very involved in the business community and has been a board member for the Trident Workforce Investment Board for more than 10 years, serving as chair for two of those years. An active Rotarian, Jan is a big supporter of Communities in Schools and a leader in fundraising for the Annual Roundball Classic Basketball Tournament.
A long-time advocate of the use of professional affiliated staffing services and certified recruiters, Jan is also an aggressive proponent of membership in The South Carolina Staffing Association, believing that membership in this association promotes ethical behavior in our industry.
Alternative Staffing partners closely with the One Stop System and other community agencies to provide employment opportunities.
Jan graduated from the Illinois State University Magna Cum Laude with a degree in social work.
Craig Lake, President
Craig’s knowledge and hands-on experience with skilled trades and other industrial positions was invaluable in his early career and continue to serve us well today.
In 1993, Craig and Jan decided to leave the world of corporate staffing and start their own business. Based on the belief that they could offer clients an alternative to the one-size-fits-all staff solutions that were available in the market, Alternative Staffing was born. When he is not directing operations as president of Alternative Staffing, Inc., Craig enjoys golfing and being on the water with his family.
Vicki Hotchkiss, Sales Manager
Vicki brings more than 15 years of outside sales experience to Alternative Staffing. With previous work in media sales in the Charleston market and more than five years in office management in the Myrtle Beach area, Vicki is known for being very involved in various community networking groups.
Vicki received her bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina. When she isn’t selling for us, Vicki loves to spend time with her son and husband, enjoys traveling, water sports and reading. She supports Low Country Orphan Relief and St. Jude’s.
Ruby Mae Johnson Wallace, Branch Manager
After spending a few years as a stay-at-home wife and mother, Ruby mae wanted to get back into the workforce. Her career path went from cosmetology to customer service before landing an Alternative Staffing field associate. After that assignment ended, we literally could not get rid of her. Ruby mae showed up at our office every day, even when there weren’t any assignments available. She watched and learned, even teaching herself how to work the computers, and fell in love with the staffing industry.
Her hard work and perseverance paid off, Ruby mae has been with Alternative Staffing ever since. Working her way from receptionist to recruiter, Ruby mae was named office manager in 2010.
Ruby mae is mother to three beautiful daughters, Alicia, Aaliyha and Alayisha and loves to travel and read romance novels.
Chellet Davis, Assistant Manager
A day wouldn’t be complete if you don’t hear from Chellet. Her prompt phone calls have been a mainstay here at Alternative Staffing. Chellet runs the Summerville, SC office with pride and prestige. If you’re looking for a hard working recruiter in the Summerville area, Chellet is your gal.
Sarah Myers, Senior Recruiter
On our team Sarah is known as ‘The Real Deal.’ As part of her role, Sarah spends just as much time on-site learning processes as she does behind a desk recruiting. She goes above and beyond to learn more than what is contained on a candidate’s resume; she knows what they ate for breakfast. Managing our Skilled Industrial Placement Operation, Sarah uses her extensive talent network to expand our pool of pre-qualified industrial candidates and pulls from her manufacturing background to serve as our client liaison.
After serving twelve years in the U.S. Navy, Sarah settled here in the Charleston area in 1995, and we are glad she did. From that time until joining our time in 2002, she was a leader in Lowcountry Manufacturing. Since that time, she has been a client favorite in our Skilled Industrial Division.
Paul Kirkland, Executive Director of Human Resources
Paul joined Alternative Staffing with an expertise in management and customer service. He gained incredible experience in the food and beverage industry as the general manager of a high volume restaurant for six years along with working for Fortune 500 companies.
Paul is a graduate of the University of Georgia with a BA in Graphic Design. In his spare time, Paul enjoys doing freelance work for local businesses and non-profits. As a Georgia native and UGA alumni, Paul is an avid Georgia Bulldogs fan, “Go Dawgs!”
You can count on Paul at Alternative Staffing to provide his impeccable service and superior dedication.
Misty Walker-Smith, Accounting Manager
Misty Walker-Smith brings years of book keeping, payroll, and human resources experience to Alternative. Misty and her family moved to the Charleston Area from Indiana three years ago. She enjoys fishing, gardening, and drawing. She is also a fan of the Dallas Cowboys and Indianapolis Colts. Misty has also served in leadership capacities with the Cub Scouts and Ashley Ridge JROTC Booster Club.
Samantha Ringer, Accounts Receivable Associate
Samantha came to Alternative Staffing with the desire to always work hard and learn new things. Trying to keep up with Sarah’s instructions hasn’t been easiest of things, but her determination to move up the chain to recruiter status one day has kept her focused. That was her dream anyway, until she positions changed, and now she is helping Misty run the payroll office, as well as being our AR/AP associate. It was a change scenery, but she couldn’t be any happier helping and getting ready for each payroll week.
Samantha was living in her small New York town when she decided to follow her husband Jimmy, who is currently serving in the United States Air Force, to Joint Base Charleston. She enjoys spending most of her time relaxing with her three dogs, Amelia, Han and Leia. When she isn’t relaxing, Sam likes to like to take her Jeep around a few mud puddles and recreate the back woods activities from which her husband and herself came.
Keya Williams, Staffing Coordinator
“One key to success is to have lunch at the time of day most people have breakfast.“ ~Robert Brault
You won’t catch Keya sleeping when it’s time to get the job done with a smile of her face.
April Clarke, Recruiter
Originally from New York, April started working in the staffing industry in 2013. April can honestly say, “I love and enjoy what I do. Knowing that I am able to help others and place them to work that fits in their daily life schedule.”
As a mother of 3, April knows how hard it is to find a job that works out with children. She takes pride in what she does with helping employees succeed.
April thinks of herself as a BEAST at her job. She’s learned a lot from her hardworking, easy to get along with Senior Recruiter, Ms. Sarah. The staff even calls her “Sarah Jr.” in the office! From time to time there comes along potential employees that complain about a job they don’t want to travel to and from and her favorite line is “A JOB OR NO JOB” , “A PAYCHECK OR NO CHECK AT ALL.” What else can she say? She’s a Taurus. 😊
Nora Schaffer, Recruiter
When asked what she does during her time off, Nora asks, “Free-time, what’s that?” You can count on Nora to be there for you and give her 100% each and every day.
Shelby Bundrick, Recruiter
Shelby Bundrick says it’s her pleasure in helping individuals bettering themselves by gaining a new job. The jobs she places her employees on are not only to receive a paycheck but to also gain confidence in their everyday lifestyles. “I know how it feels to be at your lowest needing a helping hand and needing someone to have your back to help you onto your feet. Life is full of ups and downs, you just have to remember to always stay positive and never give up!”
